A browser-based alternative to Unsnap

Unsnap fixes the same export, and its apps do it on your own device with nothing uploaded. The catch is how it gets there. It's a program you install: free on Windows, with a Mac version announced, and $4.99 on iPhone from the App Store, where it writes straight into your photo library. It also sells an online restore, which works by uploading your export to its servers. Before any of that, it's worth asking what you're letting onto the machine that holds ten years of your photos.

When Unsnap is the better choice
If you're comfortable installing software, Unsnap's free Windows app will do the job, and on iPhone it saves straight into your photo library, which is handy if that's where you want everything. The trade is the usual one for any installed app, theirs or anyone's: it can do more than a web page, and it stays on your computer until you remove it.
When this one is the better choice
- You'd rather not install anything. A web page can't touch anything you didn't hand it, and when you close the tab it's gone. A download you run against your whole photo history is a different level of trust, and on a work or shared computer you may not be allowed to install it at all.
- You don't want the online version. Unsnap's online restore uploads your export to its servers. This has no upload step at all, and never touches your photo library or your original ZIPs: it writes new copies.
- You can check it without trusting anyone. Turn off your Wi-Fi after this page loads and it still works, or watch the browser's Network tab stay quiet. An installed app is much harder to see inside.
- Long videos. Snapchat cuts long recordings into 10 second clips, and this joins them back into one file.
